AUSTIN — One of Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio’s leading supporters in South Carolina called on Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to repudiate a fake Facebook post that falsely implies he has switched allegiances in the GOP nominating contest — to Cruz.

U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, offering no evidence the Cruz camp was responsible for the social media item, nevertheless was quick on Tuesday to link the incident to other alleged examples of close-to-the-ethical-line behavior by Cruz and his campaign.

Later Tuesday, though, Cruz tweeted denials that his campaign had anything to do with the fake, Gowdy-is-switching post. Cruz called the message “fraudulent” and “deplorable,” and said, “Our campaign had absolutely nothing to do with this.
